Health insurance in Slovakia is mandatory and person who is obliged to have health insurance should register within 8 days since the health insurance obligation starts. Slovak health insurance system is part of EU health care system and therefore mandatory health insurance contributions have to be paid only in one of the member states of the European Economic Area.
There are 3 public health insurance companies in Slovakia:
Union – private company which offers health insurance.
Všeobecná zdravotná poisťovňa – government owned health insurance company.
Dôvera – private company.
Foreigners who are not citizens of a member state of the European Union and, at the same time, cannot participate in the Slovak public health insurance system can apply for commercial health insurance which covers urgent health care and meets requirements of the law 404/2011. This insurance is required by foreign police when applying for residence permit or work permit in Slovakia. Insurance is valid in all countries of Schengen area and 24/7 phone assistance is available in English, Russian, Polish and Slovak language.
